Gardening in a small space

We used to love growing our own vegies and herbs, but since moving into an apartment, we really didn’t have any space for a vegie patch.

Our new wine barrel gardens have solved this problem, and we are now harvesting enough salad and herbs for all of our meals! All of the family is involved and it is so rewarding growing our own vegies and herbs, especially because it means the kids actually will eat them!

Tomatoes in abundance!

It has been a busy summer so far at Wine Barrel Gardens, we have been delivering our unique gardens all over Sydney at a constant pace. Things do tend to slow down a bit once the days get shorter and it gets a little cooler.

We live in an apartment on the Northern Beaches, and no surprise here, we have a couple of wine barrels planted with all sorts of things.

For the first time this summer we tried tomatoes and were pleasantly surprised to see how well they went. Just three little plants bought from the local fruit and veggie shop soon grew into a mass of tangled tomato vines.

After trimming (read hacking!) them back several times to keep them under some kind of control, we still received a great crop of fresh juicy tomatoes.

The photo here is one batch that we picked, probably in total the 3 plants had around 25 – 30 tomatoes. So while we promote our mini gardens for herbs and small salad vegetables, there is no reason why you can’t be a bit more adventurous in such a small space!

Thank you!

Hi Clair,

My mature olives look great in the half wine barrels! I’m very happy…see attached photo. I am an Interior Designer and often do Exterior Landscape Schemes.

Better Homes & Gardens – planting a garden in wine barrels

In the Better Homes and Gardens episode this week (27th March 2009), Graham Ross, the resident gardner, did a section on potted gardens. We were very happy to see that one of the options he covered in the show was potting salad vegetables in a half wine barrel.

Graham’s garden was almost identical to the wine barrel gardens that we supply; full of great salad vegetable and herb plants.

Subsequent to the show, we have received a lot of enquiries about our unique gardens from far and wide. Unfortunately we are only able to deliver to the Sydney metropolitan area at this stage, please see our Delivery page for more details.

If you do, however, live in the Sydney region and are interested in our gardens, then please visit our online store to place an order or contact us if you have any questions.

Thanks to Better Homes and Gardens, it was a great show!

A more manageable garden

Not being as young as I used to be has meant that I no longer garden as often as I would like to, and it definitely rules out kneeling down next to my old garden beds.

My new wine barrel gardens mean that I can still enjoy gardening, but in a smaller and more manageable space, and no more kneeling! Having fresh herbs and vegetables just outside my front door is also great for cooking.

The two barrels look lovely beside my front door; I think the roses really add that extra special touch.
